In recent years, non-toxic candles have become increasingly popular as consumers seek safer, healthier alternatives to traditional candles. However, with the rise of terms like “clean” and “non-toxic” in the home fragrance industry, it can be difficult to determine which candles are truly safe for both our homes and the environment. The lack of standardized definitions for non-toxic candles often leaves us questioning whether these claims are genuinely reflective of safety or merely marketing tactics designed to attract eco-conscious buyers.
Education is key. Organizations like the Environmental Working Group (EWG) provide science-backed tools to help consumers make informed choices. While candles aren’t yet included in their database, EWG resources on other household products offer valuable insights. I’m optimistic that one day soon, these cozy additions to our homes will find a place on the list.
Growing up on Elmsgrove Lane, candles were more than just sources of light—they were part of cherished memories. The right candle can evoke nostalgia, set a mood, or simply add warmth to a space. With increasing concerns about indoor air quality and health, it’s essential to choose candles that align with our focus on creating healthier homes.
While eliminating all toxins from our lives is unrealistic, we can take a few simple steps to reduce our exposure to toxins – pulmonologist Sobia Farooq, MD agrees: while candles can impact indoor air quality, with a few precautions candles won’t pose a major risk to your health.
By making more informed choices, we not only protect our health but also support a market that values transparency and sustainability.
In just three simple steps, you can ensure that your candles are safe for a healthy home:
Look for candles made from 100% natural, plant-based waxes like soy, beeswax, or coconut, as these are less likely to release harmful chemicals into the air. Avoid candles made with paraffin wax, a petroleum by-product that can emit harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds), such as benzene, which the American Cancer Society links to an increased risk of cancer.
Be mindful of natural wax blend claims, like “coconut wax-blend.” Companies cleverly leverage these phrases in marketing campaigns, but realistically, “blends” contain both traditional paraffin wax and natural wax. Only 100% plant-based wax choices are truly cleaner, safer choices for a healthy home.
When it comes to fragrance, there are many thoughts and opinions as to what should be considered “safe.” Accepting that it would be impossible to eliminate every “toxic” ingredient, my personal choice is to focus on eliminating a few ingredients with proven harmful effects wherever possible. Always avoid exposure to phthalates, known endocrine disruptors, when choosing a non-toxic candle.
Many candle brands recognize phthalates as harmful and have formulated their fragrances to smell just as good without the use of these chemicals. Look for candles labeled “phthalate-free” to minimize exposure.
Lead wicks were outlawed in 2003 by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, but it’s still wise to ensure your candles use wicks made from cotton or wood.
Supporting brands that prioritize sustainability and transparency can make a significant impact. Look for companies that use recyclable packaging, source ingredients responsibly, and disclose their sourcing practices.
One of my favorite brands for non-toxic candles is favorite is Nette. With their detailed “No List” of ingredients they promise never to use in their products and focus on sustainability, I think Nette does a lovely job balancing luxury with health and wellness. While this brand is on the pricey side, I find their quality superior to most. Even unlit, the throw of these candles can set a mood in any room! A personal favorite is Chai Milk, which is creamy, spicy, multi-faceted scent that pairs perfectly with a nice slow morning and a cup of coffee.
Many local artisans and small businesses offer high-quality, non-toxic candles. Farmers’ markets and local craft fairs are excellent places to discover unique, handmade options.
A Hill Country favorite is Cadeau Dripping Springs, which boasts a great story about the founder, Amy, creating a healthier home for her children who were diagnosed with reactive airways disease.
Choosing non-toxic candles is a simple yet effective way to enhance your home’s cozy ambiance while protecting your health. By focusing on plant-based ingredients, avoiding harmful additives, and supporting sustainable brands, you can enjoy the warmth and comfort of candles without compromising your family’s well-being.
