Homemade Turkey Burgers

Protein is key to any healthy diet – from healthy bones to healthy muscles, it’s key to feeling and functioning your best. I’m always looking for new ways to introduce protein into our weekly meal plan, and have found that turkey is a great alternative to chicken (a staple in our kitchen). However, this recipe also works well with ground chicken if that’s what you have on hand.

I often associate the memory of a specific food or meal with an event that occurred earlier in my life. If I smell or taste something familiar, it can transport me back to another time and serve as a reminder of vacations, family dinners, or fun outings.

One of the memories I associate with childhood is a delicious burger. Growing up, I was a competitive ice skater, and we’d go to a local burger joint after competitions with the other skating families to relax and celebrate the results. Sometimes, off-ice drama would follow skaters to the community dinner, but we always ended up having a good time and a delicious (although, not so healthy) meal.

The meals I find myself craving are often ones like this that that hold special memories, and I love to try to make my own healthy version of nostalgic meals with real, whole foods. My turkey burger recipe focuses on delivering a solid dose of protein in a delicious, straightforward way while still harkening back to the old school burgers we all know and love.

To add flavor to the the burgers, the turkey is seasoned with fresh parsley and spices including cayenne, which give it a subtle yet noticeable kick. A small amount of Primal Kitchen Mayo, which has no additives or preservatives, is used to help form the patty, coupled with an equal amount of greek yogurt to keep things light.

I hope you enjoy this quick and healthy turkey burger recipe, perfect to bring back childhood memories for your next weeknight dinner!

Ground turkey is a great high-protein alternative to chicken. However, this recipe also works well with ground chicken if that’s what you have on hand.

  • Author: Alexandra McDowell
  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Cook Time: 40 minutes
  • Total Time: 65 minutes
  • Yield: 4 burgers

Ingredients

Units
  • 1 pound ground turkey (buy organic wherever possible)
  • 1/2 red onion diced
  • 1/2 tbsp greek yogurt (I use 2% but any plain greek yogurt will work)
  • 1/2 tbsp Primal Kitchen Mayo
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley
  • 1 tsp chia
  • 1 tsp cayenne
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Squeeze of lemon

Instructions

Line baking sheet with parchment paper and preheat oven to 425 degrees.

Combine all ingredients in bowl. Divide mixture into four portions and shape each portion into a patty. Place each patty on the baking sheet.

Bake for 20 minutes.  Flip the burgers and bake for another 20 minutes or until burgers are lightly browned.

Serve on a bed of butter lettuce with your favorite toppings.
